Lucy Cobb Institute

                                                                                 

The Lucy Cobb Institute, a school for girls, was founded in 1859 by Thomas R.R. Cobb.  It was named in honor of his daughter, Lucy, who died at the age of 14. It ceased operation in 1931. Today it is the home of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, a part of the University of Georgia.

The Georgian

 The Georgian was once one of the most elegant hotels in Athens.    Now it's condos.
 Moina Michael, "The Poppy Lady," lived on the fifth floor of The Georgian in the late 30's and early '40s.

Located on Broad Street at the base of the Confederate memorial there is a plaque honoring Moina Michael.
