Christmas in Athens
Milledge Avenue is home to a number of Sororities and Fraternities who really know how to decorate their beautiful houses. Here are a few of my favorites.
Alpha Gamma Delta house, located at 530 South Milledge, is also known as the
"Wedding Cake House."
Delta Sigma Phi House, located at 285 South Milledge, was built
by Andrew Lipscome, UGA's first chancellor, for his mother.
Mary Lipscome was the principal of the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls.
My favorite this year is the Phi Mu House located at 250 South Milledge.
It was built in 1858 by Thomas and Sarah Hamilton who are said
to be Georgia's first millionaires.
Simply breathtaking!

Ghosts of Athens Past
Have you noticed all the old signs on the sides of the buildings downtown? I love it when the owners leave remnants of the past. Here are a few of my favorites.
If you look close you can make out "Davison's" under the top red line. Davison's was a department store that occupied the building now housing The Mellow Mushroom, Herschel's, and the Graduate School. As a kid I used to visit the store and dream. To me it was the most magical place I had ever seen. You can see this sign from the corner of Broad and Jackson.
The next two are on the side of the Magnolias also located on the corner of Broad Street and Jackson.
Just walk up a few paces toward the Arch and you will see this cool advertisement from the past.

Closed for the Georgia-Florida Game
Most of the local restaurants and stores will be closed today so that people can either go to or watch the Georgia-Florida game. Standing in line last night to get into the Georgia Theatre for the awesome Folk show Todd Snider brought to Athens, I overhead a couple from Atlanta comment about how dead Athens was on a Friday night. They were unaware of how many people make the trip to Jacksonville to drink and watch the DAWGS play ball. The couple were even more amazed to hear about the one day "fall break" that the university started several years ago to legitimize the faculty's practice of cancelling classes on the Friday before the game. Just another thing that makes Athens the unique city it is.
Go Dawgs!

Why I Hate Tailgaters
Now, I will admit not all tailgaters are drunk irresponsible individuals who leave their trash all over the campus and relive themselves in the magnolia trees. However, as someone who has worked many a game day I have seen drunk "fans" use the bathroom in the bushes and trees around our library. I have seen fights break out on the quad and I have endured loud mouthed students and alumni wishing they were still students.
It makes me sick to see port-a-potties sitting in front of the historic Hirsch Hall. Obviously the university is trying to cut down on intoxicated fans dropping their drawers and relieving themselves in plain view.
Walking home Friday I was behind a group of 50 year old individuals who were hooting and hollering to their son and his friends who were screaming out the window of their downtown apartment. My first thought was the legacy continues. If only these "fans" would leave as much cash in our beautiful city as they do trash!
I will leave you with a beautiful shot today. Here's a view of Athens from the top of the Main Library.

UGA Football Fashion
I saw these beauties as I was walking downtown yesterday. This is a sure sign that football season is about to start. Can't you picture someone wearing these with a short black dress as she heads down to Sanford Stadium to cheer on the Dawgs?

Random Shots for a Saturday morning
Just some random shots that I came across this morning while I was trying to organize my photos. I always enjoy the messages on the Methodist church downtown but this one is my favorite!
And she did bigger and better. Great job everyone. I am looking forward to more concerts this year.
And of course, Jared did not save the tree. I don't have words to describe the house that took the place of the tree. My mom always told me if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. Let's just leave it at that.
Athens is my favorite town. There is both good and bad here like in any town. New and old. Ugly and beautiful. Sometimes you will find them living right next door to each other. I hope you get a chance to enjoy our town.

Lost Art
While I was looking at some of the photos that I have taken I came across one of the beautiful mural that used to be on the side of the Georgia Theatre. I must admit that I miss this touching memorial. There was something comforting about the angel watching over the mural. The inscription used to read:
"All the love I had ever known went away. I was dazed & my eyes were white like cueballs. I fell asleep where I stood crumbled in a heap. When I awoke there was an angel sitting on the floor beside me. She stayed with me every day, every hour with her hand in mine until I found my love.
This mural is dedicated to Aimee.

Signs (with apologies to the Five Man Electrical Band)
While walking home from work today I passed this sign. No stopping or standing? Really? Be careful. They might prosecute you if you spend too much time trying to read the historical marker to the right of the "sign." While I was taking the photos I kept expecting someone to come running out of the church yelling at me for stopping on the corner.
Actually I am sure this sign is just a way for the church to try to drive away the homeless people who congregate in the "park" next door. I guess they haven't gotten around to reading Matthew 25:31-46 yet.

Beautiful view of Herty Field
This is my favorite view on campus. To find this you would have to go to the third floor of the annex of the law library.
